1. Course Description Theories of Learning and Instruction is one of the introductory educational psychology courses offered by the Department of Education, designed to familiarize students with basic concepts and principles of learning and instruction. We will survey some of the representative theories in the field regarding how learning takes place and how instruction should be designed and delivered to help learners learn better. In particular, we will focus on theories and principles that are relevant to classroom teaching and learning and applicable to diverse age groups, as opposed to private, corporate, or informal teaching and learning situations for a particular age group. 2. Course Objectives Successful learners will be able to do the following at the end of this course: 1) Define and give examples of key concepts in learning and instruction. 2) Compare and contrast behavioral, cognitive, and constructivist paradigms of learning and instruction. 3) Explain major theories and principles of cognitive development, learning, and instruction and discuss their implications for education. 4) Develop instructional strategies that could accommodate various individual differences among students.
