This course offers a one-semester overview of the principal way in which the English language has changed from its beginning in pre-history to the present day. The focus of the course is on internal (linguistic) change, i.e., change in the lexicon, phonology, morphology, and syntax.The main questions are: what has changed? how has it changed? why has it changed?
