This course introduces the history of Jeju haenyeo, their diving work, community, seasonal work outside of Jeju, and a comparison between Jeju haenyeo and Japanese ama. By examining their marine harvesting activities in this high-technology era, we may understand them in light of ecofeminism which emphasizes a symbiosis between humans and nature, and find their potential value as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity which emphasizes sustainability.
