강의설명
This course is an intermediate-level undergraduate phonology course for students who have basic linguistics knowledge from courses such as Introduction to Linguistics. It focuses on fundamental concepts and theories of phonology (especially, classical generative phonology). In addition to lectures and assignments, students will do basic research in phonology. Occasionally, real-life issues (e.g., practical application of English phonology to English language learning/education) will be dealt with. While going through the semester, students develop and sharpen their argumentation and analytical reasoning skills. Caveat: This is not a pronunciation or phonics class, although one can learn these things occasionally. Simple memorization is not enough for this course. Students need to understand patterns and principles to new linguistic problems. Upon successfully completing the course, students will be able to: - pronounce consonants and vowels in English correctly and explain how they are produced, - distinguish phonology from phonics and phonetics, - tell differences between physical sounds (pronunciations) and mental sound units (phonemes), - explain derivations of multiple allophones from phonemes and the relationships of allophones of single phonemes, - understand the general and overall pattern of English phonology, and - develop argumentation and analytical reasoning skills.
