English Phonology provides a general introduction to the study of speech sounds in English. The course starts with an introduction to articulatory phonetics, which focuses on how speech sounds are articulated by the speaker. We then learn to transcribe sounds of English using the International Phonetic Alphabet and a computer software Praat. We then move on to the grasp of sound changes entailed in English word formation and to an overview of the phonological theories and formalisms for representing these changes in English.
